Momigami Paper Vessels

A contemporary sculptural approach to an ancient Japanese craft

Momigami: The Japanese Art of Kneading Paper

Experimental Exploration

Learn the ancient Japanese craft of hand kneading paper known as Momigami, as you dive into an experimental contemporary approach to create elegant 3D sculptural vessels with tantalizing texture and interesting surface design.

Finding freedom in intuitive expression

Beginning with an overview of the ancient craft of momigami as the foundation of our work, I’ll guide participants through the process of working out design concepts with an intuitive approach to create a sculptural 3D work with and without inner support structures.

Techniques covered in this course include:

  • The ancient craft of hand kneading paper known as momigami
  • developing experimental sculptural designs
  • surface design and details
  • attaching elements to the interior
  • creating lidded vessels
  • finishing techniques with and without the use of encaustic wax. (access to my basics of encaustic video will be made available to participants who request it.)
  • Discussion will include displaying work and functional uses.

This workshop will guide you each step of the way, from paper selection, creating the traditional paste, hand kneading paper, proper attachment techniques, developing experimental intuitive layers and surface details that make the entire work a tactile, visceral experience for artist and viewer.
